Child Support
When spouses separate, a spouse may request the other to pay an amount of child support. The amount of child support is determined using a child support calculator that applies a specific formula referred to as Child Support Guidelines. The court will presume that the amount of child support calculated according to the guidelines is correct. An award of child support is based on certain factors such the number of children, gross monthly income of each parent, the amount of time a child lives with each parent, the cost of day care and health insurance, etc.
